BRAC Bank Reading Cafés bring author and readers together

BRAC Bank’s Reading Cafés recently brought readers and author Dipu Mahmud together for a dynamic discussion of his acclaimed short story collection, “Breakup”. The event highlighted contemporary Bangladeshi literature and the shifting narratives of social change.
In a rare display of humility, Mahmud acknowledged during sessions at BRAC Bank Sepal Reading Café and BRAC Bank Chuadanga Reading Café that he learns to write by listening to readers discuss and critique his work.
Literature enthusiasts read selected stories from the collection and shared insights on themes, characterisation, language and narrative technique.
The author’s presence enabled direct dialogue between the writer and the readers.
Dipu Mahmud, a development practitioner by profession, stands among Bangladesh’s most prolific contemporary authors.
He has published 132 books, including novels, short stories and children’s literature, and has built a distinguished literary career.
Discussions centred on “Breakup”, which explores relationships and love in contemporary Bengali society.
Readers noted that while the collection primarily focuses on romantic relationships and the emotional complexities of modern life, it also includes two stories set during Bangladesh’s Liberation War, adding historical depth and variety.
Mahmud’s ability to connect with younger readers stood out during the event.
Born in the 1960s, Mahmud wrote many stories with Generation Z readers in mind.
He studied Gen Z language, expressions and communication styles to bridge generational gaps.
Members of the reading cafés praised his contemporary diction, noting its authenticity and natural flow.
Participants also highlighted his relatable characters and realistic scenarios, which resonate with younger audiences.
For Mahmud, the event offered candid feedback and literary reflection.
Listening to readers’ analyses offered valuable insight into how his work is received.
He acknowledged that such conversations deepen his understanding of his strengths and limitations as a writer, contributing to his growth.
The session underscored the expanding role of BRAC Bank’s Reading Cafés in promoting literary engagement nationwide.
By providing platforms for readers and writers to engage, the reading cafés foster a vibrant reading culture and thoughtful discourse.
Participants concluded that “Breakup” succeeds as both a collection of love stories and a reflection of shifting social realities and generational change.
The event showed literature’s power to bridge generational divides, spark meaningful conversations and offer learning opportunities for readers and authors alike.
