BB orders extended banking hours near cattle markets

Scheduled banks have been asked to extend banking services from 10am to 10pm through branches and sub-branches located near designated cattle markets in the metropolitan areas of Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi and Rangpur.

Bangladesh Bank issued the directive on Sunday to facilitate smooth financial transactions during the busy cattle trading period ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, according to a circular.

The central bank said large volumes of cash transactions usually take place in cattle markets during this period, making financial security and safe transaction systems highly important.

According to the circular, banks have been advised to ensure an adequate cash supply and uninterrupted banking facilities from May 24 until the day before Eid-ul-Azha.

Branches located near cattle markets have also been instructed to provide services such as cash deposits, withdrawals and account opening facilities for traders and customers, it added.

The central bank further emphasized the use of digital banking channels and mobile financial services to reduce the risks associated with carrying large amounts of cash.

Necessary security measures around temporary cattle markets have also been recommended.
