Bus overturns on Padma Bridge, 10 hurt

A passenger bus of New Green Line Express lost control on the slope of the Padma Bridge and overturned, injuring at least 10 passengers including a child.

The accident occurred on Monday afternoon at the Mawa end of the bridge in Lauhjang Upazila, Munshiganj.

Upon receiving the alert, a Fire Service rescue team rushed to the scene and transported the injured to hospital.

The incident was confirmed by Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence.

According to Fire Service sources, at around 1:37 PM on Monday, the New Green Line Express bus – travelling from Magura to Dhaka – lost control due to excessive speed as it reached the slope of the Padma Bridge.

The bus struck the roadside railing with great force and overturned, leaving several passengers trapped inside.

Two rescue teams from Sreenagar Fire Station arrived quickly at the scene and freed the injured passengers. They were then transported by Fire Service ambulance to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex.

The injured passengers are: Saifullah and Lutfor from Magura Sadar Upazila; Rebeka Khatun from Alamdanga Upazila, Chuadanga; Nur Islam and Rashida from Damurhuda Upazila; Fatema from Mohammadpur Upazila, Magura; Saif from Sreepur Upazila; and Arafat from Madhukhali Upazila, Faridpur.

The Fire Service has preliminarily attributed the accident to reckless speeding, though it noted that a proper investigation by the relevant authorities is needed to determine the exact cause.

Following the accident, the bus was removed from the road and traffic was restored to normal.
