DMP vows crackdown on extortion, cybercrime
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced a zero-tolerance campaign against extortion, mugging, drugs, cyber fraud and juvenile gangs as part of a broader effort to strengthen law and order in the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
Speaking at a “Meet the Press” programme at the DMP media centre on Wednesday, newly appointed DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed said no criminal would receive protection based on political or social identity.
He said crimes such as online gambling, hacking and cyber fraud have emerged as growing threats in Dhaka, prompting police to intensify operations from May 1 and strengthen the DMP cyber unit.
The commissioner said a newly installed digital forensic laboratory at the Detective Branch office is expected to improve criminal investigations.
Highlighting traffic management challenges in the city, he said AI-powered cameras have been installed at key intersections while an e-prosecution system based on video footage has also been introduced.
Mosleh Uddin said police have taken extensive security measures ahead of Eid, including additional deployment at cattle markets, Eid congregations, shopping centres and residential areas.
Security has also been tightened at transport hubs to prevent crimes and passenger harassment during the holiday rush, he added.
The commissioner urged citizens to contact police or call the national emergency service 999 in case of suspicious activities and sought media cooperation in raising public awareness.
