Driver flees with Tk 1cr belonging to Chinese businessman

A car driver has allegedly fled with Tk1 crore from the vehicle of a Chinese garment businessman in Rupganj, Narayanganj.

A case was filed against the accused driver, Zahid Hasan, at Rupganj Police Station on Wednesday.

The Chinese businessman, Yu Shaoli, has been involved in Bangladesh’s garment manufacturing sector for nearly a decade. He owns four factories in Gazipur, lives in Gulshan and also operates businesses in other countries.

Akramul Islam, general manager of the administration division of Lavender Fashion Limited, filed the case against Zahid Hasan, 30, of Kulbaria area under Harinakunda Police Station in Jhenaidah.

According to the complaint, Zahid joined Lavender Fashion Limited as the driver of its chairman, Yu Shaoli, on April 3.

On Tuesday, after completing work at a factory in Rajendrapur, Gazipur, Zahid drove Yu Shaoli towards Dhaka. At around 7:10pm, the driver stopped the car in front of Purbachar Cadet Club Hotel in Rupganj. Yu Shaoli entered the hotel to have a meal.

The complaint alleges that Zahid then drove the car to the parking area of Le D’Or Coffee Shop in Gulshan, took a bag containing Tk1 crore from the boot and fled.

When Yu Shaoli came out of the hotel, he found that both the car and driver were missing. Repeated attempts to contact Zahid by phone were unsuccessful as his mobile was switched off.

Akramul Islam said the car was later recovered from the Le D’Or Coffee Shop parking area in Gulshan, but the bag containing the money was missing from the boot.

Mehedi Islam, assistant superintendent of police of Rupganj Circle (C-Circle), said a case had been filed and the incident was under investigation.

“Efforts are underway to arrest the accused and recover the money,” he said.
