Drunk police officer withdrawn, probe body formed

A video of Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Mannan of Narayanganj Sadar Naval Police Station behaving drunkenly has gone viral on social media. The incident occurred late Friday night near the Central Ferry Ghat area beside Sadar Naval Police Station on the eastern bank of the Shitalakshya River in the city.

Sadar Naval Police Station Acting OC Rakibuzzaman confirmed on Saturday that Abdul Mannan is indeed a police SI.

In the video circulating on social media, SI Abdul Mannan is seen behaving erratically as if intoxicated – at times sitting on the ground singing, at other times dancing, and later seen wailing.

His incoherent speech and unusual behaviour drew a crowd of onlookers at the scene.

In the video, when those present asked him the reason for his behaviour, Abdul Mannan said his wife had beaten him, and admitted that he had consumed alcohol as a result.

However, Acting OC Rakibuzzaman said Abdul Mannan has been suffering from mental health issues due to family problems, and that medical documents have been collected from his family.

The OC further confirmed that after the viral video was brought to the attention of senior police officials, Abdul Mannan was withdrawn from duty and an investigation committee has been formed.
