Let the Dhaka-Delhi relations no longer be an obstacle

The results of the elections in India’s several states, including the West Bengal, have been declared. After the change in West Bengal, which borders Bangladesh on the west and north-west, there are discussions on both sides of the border about its impact on Bangladesh-India diplomatic and trade relations.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has created a new history in the West Bengal by defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s party, the Trinamool Congress.

This is the BJP’s first victory in this state.

In the past, political differences between the West Bengal government and the centre have led to complications in the implementation of many central decisions, especially in matters related to border trade, migration, security and transboundary water sharing agreement with Bangladesh.

This has disrupted policy continuity and sometimes indirectly affected relations between the two neighbouring countries.

According to media reports, out of the 293 seats voted in West Bengal, the BJP won 207 seats. On the other hand, the Trinamool Congress won 80 seats.

Along with West Bengal, the election results have also been declared in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.

After the results were announced, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the victory wearing Bengali attire, dhoti and Punjabi.

At that time, Modi also said, “Many lives have been lost in political violence in Bengal, this time it is not revenge, but change.” That is, he has indicated a change in the West Bengal.

Since the announcement of the election results, there have been reports of clashes between Trinamool Congress and BJP workers from several places in West Bengal.

There have also been allegations of attempts to capture several areas known as Trinamool Congress ‘fortresses’. Both parties have alleged attacks on their candidates and supporters.

Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee has alleged that the BJP has stolen the results of at least 100 of their seats. On the other hand, analysts claim that a lot of anger has built up against the Trinamool during its 15-year rule.

This has been manifested in these elections. It was also alleged that during Mamata’s time in power, the most administrative corruption in the history of West Bengal occurred.

There will be victories and defeats in elections. Trinamool came to power after 34 years of CPM rule in West Bengal. There will be changes again in the future.

But it cannot have any impact on the relations between the two neighbouring countries. India is our neighbour with a long common border. We want the relations between our two countries to be closer and stronger in the days to come.
