‘Crime rising than interim govt period’

Cumilla-4 lawmaker Hasnat Abdullah has expressed concern over the country’s worsening law and order situation, stating that crime has reportedly surpassed levels seen during the interim government period.

“People now believe that the level of crime has exceeded all limits compared to what was witnessed during the interim government,” he said while speaking to reporters on 5 May, following a meeting with local stakeholders on the Chandina-Debidwar highway expansion.

Hasnat, chief coordinator (southern region) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), also urged the home minister to clarify the steps being taken to curb crime and outline future measures.

Referring to India’s legislative assembly elections, he emphasized the need to protect the rights of minority communities, sending a positive message globally.

He stressed that attempts to portray Bangladesh’s communal harmony negatively must be countered, highlighting that the country remains a safe place for people of all religions and beliefs.

Additionally, Hasnat called for service-oriented institutions to remain people-centric, ensuring direct access between service providers and citizens, without intermediaries. He also urged more proactive efforts to safeguard citizens’ rights.
