Green Thursday Observed at Educational Institutions in Kishoreganj
A wave of cleanliness swept through educational institutions across Kishoreganj on Thursday as teachers and students joined hands in a collective effort to clean their school premises, responding to a call from the district administration to observe “Green Thursday” every week.
Armed with brooms and cleaning equipment, students stepped beyond the classroom to take part in a practical lesson on cleanliness, environmental awareness and civic responsibility. The initiative turned school campuses into vibrant spaces where students learned that keeping their surroundings clean is not merely a habit but a shared social responsibility.
The initiative was announced on Wednesday morning, September 9, when District Commissioner Sohana Nasrin held an exchange meeting with the heads of all educational institutions in Kishoreganj Sadar upazila. At the meeting, she urged schools to observe “Green Thursday” every week by involving students directly in cleaning their campuses and spreading awareness about cleanliness and environmental protection.
The response from educational institutions across Kishoreganj was spontaneous and enthusiastic. From Thursday morning, teachers and students at different schools took part in cleaning activities, removing waste from school premises and keeping the surrounding areas neat and orderly.
The most significant aspect of the initiative was the enthusiastic participation of students. Lessons on cleanliness, environmental protection and civic responsibility, usually confined to textbooks, were brought into practical life through the programme. By cleaning their own school premises, students were given an opportunity to understand that maintaining a clean environment is not the sole responsibility of an individual or an institution; it is a collective commitment.
With guidance and cooperation from teachers, the students’ collective efforts not only transformed the school environment but also conveyed a broader social message. A clean educational environment, many believe, can serve as a foundation for building a healthy, responsible and humane society.
Educationists and concerned people said initiatives of this nature could play an important role in developing environmental awareness and civic values among students.
