DoE launches drive against banned polythene in N’ganj
The Department of Environment fined two establishments in Narayanganj in a drive to stop the use and marketing of banned polythene shopping bags.
H.M. Rashed, Deputy Director of the Narayanganj Department of Environment, said that drives against banned polythene use, storage and marketing, as well as against polluting factories, will continue regularly to protect the environment.
The drive was carried out at Haji Ahsan Ullah Super Market in Siddhirganj under the leadership of Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner Al-Amin and Mahmudul Hasan from the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Monday.
According to relevant sources, ‘Shawon Store’ was fined Tk 5,000 and ‘Biozin Store’ Tk 7,000 for violating the provisions of the Environment Conservation Act, 1995.
During the drive, 100 kg of polythene shopping bags from each shop, totalling 200 kg, were seized. Inspectors Titu Barua and Reema Akter of the Narayanganj District Office of the Department of Environment submitted the prosecution.
Meanwhile, in another drive on the same day, the electricity and gas connections of an illegal factory in Fatulla area of the Sadar upazila were disconnected.
The operation was led by Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Asaduzzaman Noor of the Fatulla Circle, with a team from the district police, DPDC, Titas Gas, and the Department of Environment.
During the drive, the electricity connection of a factory named ‘Foodland Products’, located opposite the Regional Passport Office in Signboard area, was cut off and its gas meter was removed.
