Human chain against prepaid meters in Adamdighi
Locals in Santahar under Adamdighi upazila of Bogura formed a human chain on Wednesday protesting the installation of anti-aggression digital prepaid meters by NESCO at the consumer level, demanding an immediate halt to the initiative.
The hour-long programme was held at the upazila bus stand at noon, with participation from people of various professions.
Speakers at the human chain said the region is mainly dependent on agriculture and fisheries, and the introduction of digital prepaid electricity meters would increase public suffering.
They alleged that the previous government had already filled the power sector with corruption and irregularities and said they did not want such meters in their area.
They further claimed that the electricity department is shifting additional financial burdens onto consumers through demand charges and other fees associated with prepaid meters. The speakers also called for an immediate halt to the installation of prepaid meters and urged authorities to consider public concerns.
Hundreds of locals took part in the demonstration, including former general secretary of Adamdighi Press Club Khandaker Mehedi Hasan, social workers Abu Taleb Dulal, Abdul Wahab Bulu, Mizanur Rahman, Ayub Ali Mandal, Akbar Khan, Bulbul Ahmed, Ajmal Hossain, Anisul Haque Nantu, and Abdur Rahim Babu, among others.
