Bangladeshi dies in Saudi building collapse

A Bangladeshi expatriate has died in a workplace accident in Saudi Arabia’s Dammam after a wall collapsed on him, according to officials and witnesses.

The victim, 24-year-old Mohammad Yousuf, was fatally crushed when the incident occurred on Friday at a newly constructed building where he had been working.

Yousuf, who hailed from Mahtabpur village in Noakhali, had travelled to Saudi Arabia just four months earlier in search of employment opportunities.

Describing the incident, site supervisor Mohammad Hasib said Yousuf was demolishing a wall as part of electrical work at a Saudi national’s newly built house when the structure suddenly gave way, collapsing on him and killing him instantly.

Providing further background, UAE-based expatriate journalist and neighbour Manik Hossain said Yousuf had lost both his parents in childhood.

He is survived by his wife and their one-year-old daughter.

The body has been kept at a hospital morgue in Dammam, while authorities are completing the necessary legal procedures to repatriate it to Bangladesh.
