Zaima appointed UN legal officer

Carrying forward a family legacy of public service, Zaima Rahman, daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and granddaughter of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, has secured a professional appointment at the international level, joining the office of the president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Zaima has been appointed as a legal officer at the office of UNGA President Khalilur Rahman, marking a new milestone in her legal career.

A total of 40 officials are serving in various capacities at the president’s office, including six Bangladeshis.

Besides Zaima, the Bangladeshi officials serving in the office are Abdul Alim, deputy chief of cabinet; Moazzem Hossain, adviser and administrative assistant; Mafizul Islam, senior adviser on information, artificial intelligence and strategic foresight; Zakir Ahmed, senior adviser on sustainable development and climate change; and Md Rafiqul Alam Molla, senior adviser on the least developed countries.

Zaima is the only daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Dr Zubaida Rahman. Her paternal grandparents are former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, both prominent figures in Bangladesh’s political history.

She pursued her legal studies at Queen Mary University of London before completing her Bar-at-Law in the United Kingdom, laying the academic foundation for her career in law.

In a further step towards establishing her legal career in Bangladesh, Zaima passed the first-stage examination for enrolment as an advocate with the Bangladesh Bar Council in June this year.

Her latest appointment places her among the Bangladeshi professionals serving in the office of the UN General Assembly president, alongside officials working on diplomatic, administrative, development and policy-related matters.
