Bangladesh, Libya eye deeper trade coop

The Ambassador of Libya to Bangladesh, Abdulmutalib S. M. Suliman, paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Monday, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and expanding economic cooperation.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, underscored the longstanding friendship between the two countries and a shared interest in deepening engagement across multiple sectors.

During the discussions, the State Minister expressed appreciation for Libya’s continued hosting of a large number of Bangladeshi workers and professionals, noting their contribution to the Libyan economy.

She also welcomed Libya’s recent initiative to recruit medical personnel from Bangladesh, describing it as a positive step towards expanding labour cooperation.

She further thanked the Libyan authorities for ensuring the safety and security of Bangladeshi expatriates and acknowledged their support in facilitating the repatriation of stranded nationals.
Both sides explored avenues to enhance collaboration in trade and investment, particularly in energy, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals and manpower.

In this context, the State Minister proposed the establishment of a Bangladesh-Libya Joint Business Forum aimed at boosting bilateral trade and fostering closer economic links.

Ambassador Suliman reiterated Libya’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in all sectors, including the recruitment of skilled and semi-skilled workers.

He also emphasised the potential for greater collaboration in the energy sector and assured continued support for Bangladesh and its nationals residing in Libya.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of increasing people-to-people contact through cultural and sporting exchanges.

The State Minister stressed the need for regular bilateral engagements and high-level visits to sustain momentum in relations.

Reaffirming Libya’s support, the Ambassador expressed confidence that the brotherly ties between the two countries would continue to grow stronger in the coming years.
