Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that politicising education, research, and the arts weakens the foundation of a civilised society, stressing that these sectors must remain free from political influence to help build a liberal democratic state.

Speaking at the Ekushey Padak award ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Hall on Thursday, he emphasised that education, research, arts, literature, science, and technology are key drivers of national progress.

“The government is working to establish a morally sound and liberal democratic system, guided by the wisdom of the country’s intellectuals,” he said, as nine distinguished individuals and one music band were honoured with the prestigious award.

The prime minister noted that while politicians run the government, scholars and respected figures provide direction and guidance to society.

According to him, a country becomes more enlightened and prosperous when it nurtures accomplished individuals.

He recalled that the Ekushey Padak was first introduced in 1976 under the country’s
founder and former president Ziaur Rahman.

Describing the award as more than just a medal, he said it symbolises Bangladesh’s historic journey from the 1952 Language Movement to the present day, recognising contributions in education, literature, arts, research, science, technology, the Liberation War, and the Language Movement.

Originally introduced in three categories, the Ekushey Padak now honours achievements in at least 12 different fields.

Highlighting the significance of February 21, he said the day represents the nation’s consciousness and sacrifice.

He expressed hope that Bengali language and literature will one day shine brightly on the global literary stage.

Tarique also paid tribute to the martyrs of the Language Movement, praying for the acceptance of their sacrifices, and congratulated all the Ekushey Padak recipients.
