IGP says ‘no’ to activities of banned parties

Staff Reporter:

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has reinstated parties under an operational ban will not be allowed to function amid emerging reports of the Awami League reopening party offices across the country.

Speaking at a meeting at the Police Headquarters on Sunday afternoon, the police chief warned of stern action against anyone trying to create disorder.

“Activities by political parties with an operational ban cannot be allowed to continue. If anyone attempts to create chaos, legal action must be taken against them,” he said as he addressed the meeting attended by field-level officers.

The Awami League and its affiliates have been in hiding since the fall of their government on Aug 5, 2024.
On May 10 last year, the interim government banned all activities of the Awami League and its affiliate organisations under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Reports have emerged of the party’s activists gathering near party offices, staging processions, and hoisting flags in various district offices since the BNP formed the government following the general election 10 days ago.
