Shakoor Majid’s docu on Baul poet Rashid Uddin

Writer, playwright, director and architect Shakoor Majid has made a documentary about Baul poet Rashid Uddin. He has named it ‘Bhati Banglar Adhiraj’.

The inaugural screening of the documentary was held at the director’s office in Banani, Dhaka recently.

The official screening of the documentary is being organised on the eve of Rashid Uddin’s 137th birth anniversary on January 21.

The assistant director of the documentary is poet Shimul Salahuddin. Director Shakoor Majid said, “Many popular songs like Baul Rashid Uddin’s ‘Aye Je Duniya Kishero Lagia’ or ‘Shuachan Pakhi Ami Dakitechchhi Tumi Ghumaichho Naki’ have been looted.

The man whose songs have shaped the world of thought of generations after generations is now hidden from history. The main purpose of this documentary is to give him back the respect he deserves.”

After the inaugural exhibition, the director said that the Baul poet Rashid Uddin, a saint of folk music of Bhati Bangla, was born on January 21, 1889 in Bahirchapra village of Netrokona.

Many famous artistes like Shah Abdul Karim, Ukil Munshi, and Jalal Khan were his direct disciples.

On November 11, 2025, Shakoor Majid had the opportunity to visit the house of Baul Rashid Uddin and see the old manuscripts written by him.

At that time, the heirs of the artiste said that many of Rashid Uddin’s songs were published under different names by different people at different times.

As a result, the real authorship of many popular folk songs remains unknown to the general public.

The documentary ‘Bhati Banglar Adhiraj: In Search of the Rights of Baul Poet Rashid Uddin’ has been made in search of this injustice.

About content of the documentary, Shakoor Majid said that the documentary presents story of Rashid Uddin’s life, dedication, disciple-tradition, lost manuscripts, song distortion, spreading the wrong name as the creator of the song, and struggle of the heirs from an information-based and humane perspective.
