Altercation between Hasnat, Mintu at EC

Staff Reporter :

During the hearing of appeals by parliamentary election candidates at the Election Commission (EC), an altercation broke out between National Citizen Party (NCP) candidate Hasnat Abdullah and BNP candidate Abdul Awal Mintu. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at the Election Building in Agargaon, the capital.

At the time, the Commission was on a break from the appeal hearing challenging the validity of the nomination paper of Afroz Khanam, a candidate for the Manikganj-3 constituency, over allegations of dual citizenship.

Eyewitnesses said that while senior lawyers were explaining legal issues related to dual citizenship, the Commission adjourned the hearing for half an hour around noon.

After the entire Commission, led by the Chief Election Commissioner, left the hall, lawyers from both sides of the appeal gathered in front of the stage and became engaged in a heated argument.

BNP candidate Abdul Awal Mintu, contesting from Feni-3, was present amid the commotion.

An appeal has also been filed seeking the cancellation of his nomination on allegations of dual citizenship, which is why he had come to the EC to attend the hearing. During the chaos, he expressed anger toward those seeking the cancellation of his nomination.
