Joy’s 3 decades in acting

Online Report:

Shariar Nazim Joy began his career as an actor on television in 1997. He started with theatre and later became a strong presence in TV dramas; within a few years, he had firmly established himself on the small screen.

There were times when more than 20 of his dramas were aired in a single Eid season. Joy was the first Bangladeshi actor to play the lead role in a drama shot outside Bangladesh, in London, in 1998. He later worked in films as well. Through his acting, Joy has also generated significant discussion on OTT platforms. Alongside acting, he has directed dramas and films and has also achieved great success as a presenter. Because of his equal involvement across different media, many people refer to Joy as an ‘all-rounder’ of the Bangladeshi media industry.

Shariar Nazim Joy says, “Before acting in TV dramas, I worked in theatre. Altogether, my career as an actor spans 30 years. By the grace of the Almighty, my journey has never stopped. I am very fortunate that even now I am being offered leading roles. On OTT platforms, audiences have seen me in important characters in ‘7 Number Floor’, ‘840’, ‘Jimmi’, ‘Guti’, and ‘Paapkahini’, and they have appreciated my work. I am going to do ‘Paapkahini Season 2’ next. I have received loves from the audiences across multiple platforms, and for that I feel very proud of my identity as an actor. I also worked as a presenter for several years, and that identity brought me popularity as well. However, my presenting was also a kind of acting.”

Among Joy’s most popular dramas are ‘Khorer Putul’, ‘Mukhosh’, ‘Bileti Bilash’, ‘Lal Ghuri’, ‘Pata Jhore Brikkho More Na’, ‘Protidin Ekti Golap’, ‘Jodi-o Sondhya’, ‘Somudro Bilash’, and ‘Biyer Angti’, all of which gained immense popularity. He says he has worked with many renowned creators, including Ferdous Hasan, Sohel Arman, Arun Chowdhury, Selim Al Deen, Gazi Mazharul Anwar, Chayanika Chowdhury, and Aronno Anwar. Altogether, he has acted in more than 1,000 dramas, which have enriched his career. His films ‘Gram Gonj-er Piriti’ and ‘Jiboner Golpo’ also helped him reach audiences on a wider scale. Among the films he directed, ‘Prarthona’ won two National Awards. His other directed films include ‘Arpita’ and ‘Priyokomola’.

Speaking about his achievements over a 30-year acting career, Joy says, “In 30 years, no one has ever been irritated by watching my acting. No one has told me that my presence on screen bothered them. I have never even been criticised for my acting. I have tried to do good work, and audiences have appreciated those efforts. This love is the greatest achievement of my life as an actor.”

Regarding his future plans, Joy says, “My biggest challenge is to stay relevant with time. OTT content is now becoming more popular, which allows us to reach the new generation. Whatever work I do as an actor, I prepare for it very seriously. The pressure is to stay updated with time; otherwise, I will be left behind. There will always be mistakes in a person’s journey, so I try to be conscious in everything I do. From long experience, I have learned that if someone faces bad times with patience and wisdom, those times can turn into strength. I have faith in the Almighty, and with everyone’s prayers and support, I’m now confident—no one can stop me anymore.”
