A suspect detained in connection with the killing of Golam Kibria, member secretary of the Pallabi unit of Jubo Dal, died hours after being arrested in the area on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Mokhtar Hossain. Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has formed a three-member committee headed by Additional Commissioner (Admin) Md Sarwar to probe the circumstances of his death, according to a press release signed by Muhammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media).
On 17 November, Kibria was gunned down when armed assailants opened indiscriminate fire in Pallabi.
A video of the shooting later went viral on social media.Following the incident, Kibria’s wife lodged a case with Pallabi Police Station, naming five individuals along with seven to eight unidentified suspects.
The case was subsequently transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) for a more comprehensive investigation and quick arrests.
Acting on intelligence, DB teams conducted raids in different areas of Shariatpur on Thursday and detained Nazrul, Masum, and Zaman.
During initial questioning, the trio allegedly admitted their involvement and claimed that the firearm and ammunition used in the murder were held by one Moktar.
Based on this information, a DB team launched an operation around 6pm the same day at a garage in Pallabi to apprehend Mokhtar.
On spotting the officers, he attempted to escape but was intercepted and beaten by locals.
DB later recovered eight rounds of pistol ammunition from a rickshaw garage based on information provided by Moktar.
He was taken to the DB office, where he reportedly fell ill around 1:30am.
Officers transported him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors examined him, prescribed medication, and discharged him. He was then brought back to the DB office.
On Friday morning, around 10am, officers found him unconscious when they went to serve him breakfast.
He was rushed back to DMCH, where doctors declared him dead. His body has been sent for autopsy.
