FBCCI’s election, appeal boards reconstituted following HC order
Business Report :
The election and appeal boards of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) have been newly reconstituted to supervise the 2025-27 executive committee elections, in accordance with a recent High Court order.
As per the revised formation, Md Abdur Razzak, additional secretary of the commerce ministry, will serve as chairman of the election board, while joint secretaries Murshida Zaman and Mustafizur Rahman have been made members.
In the appeal board, Md Abdur Rahim Khan, additional secretary and head of the Export Wing at the commerce ministry, has been appointed chairman. He will be joined by joint secretaries Tanvir Ahmed and Md Razzakul Islam as members.
FBCCI administrator Md Hafizur Rahman announced the reconstitution on Thursday, following the High Court’s July 22 directive that instructed the commerce secretary, the director general of the Directorate of Trade Organizations (DTO), and the FBCCI administrator to form new boards and publish a fresh election schedule in line with existing laws.
Earlier in June, the commerce ministry had set up the boards and declared the election schedule, fixing September 7 as the polling date. Under that plan, delegates of the FBCCI general assembly were to elect a president, a senior vice-president, two vice-presidents, and 30 directors. The deadline was later extended by 45 days.
But businessman Alauddin Al Masum challenged the ministry’s initiative by filing a writ petition, arguing that its formation of the boards was inconsistent with the Trade Organization Act.
In light of the court’s instructions, and after consultations with the DTO and the commerce ministry, the FBCCI administrator has now reconstituted both the election and appeal boards, as confirmed in the official notification.
