Smuggling worth Tk 200 crore seized at Sylhet border in six months

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has taken a strict stance to prevent drugs and smuggling in the border area. In addition, intelligence surveillance and patrol activities have been strengthened to maintain security and stability at the border.

In view of this, the BGB has seized Indian smuggled goods worth about Tk 200 crore from the border area of ​​Sylhet in the last 6 months.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Saiful Islam Chowdhury, Commander of BGB Sylhet Sector, gave this information to journalists at a press briefing after a view-exchange meeting with locals at the Jaintapur border in Sylhet on Tuesday (June 25).

He said, “BGB has increased patrols and intelligence surveillance to maintain stability at the border. We are on the highest alert to prevent drugs and other smuggling. In addition, the BGB is continuing its activities to suppress other crimes including stone looting in tourist areas.”

Earlier, the BGB organized a meeting at the Jaintapur border on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Along with the BGB, the police, upazila administration and local people from various classes and professions participated in the meeting.

The speakers said that only the steps of the law enforcement agencies are not enough to prevent drug trafficking in the border area, awareness and cooperation of the local people are very necessary.

After the meeting, a free medical camp was organized for the common people along the border. About 1,000 people were provided free medical services and medicines, a release said.
