EC workers continue protest against transfer of NID services

Staff Reporter :

Officials and employees of the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat are staging a protest against the decision to transfer National Identity Card (NID) services from the commission to another authority.

They have been protesting against the recent decision of the interim government to establish a new independent body named Civil Registration Commission to oversee all citizen registration services, including NID and birth registrations.

The protest began in front of the EC office in Agargaon around 12:30pm, led by officials from EC’s NID wing.

Members of Bangladesh Election Commission Officers’ Association (BECOA) were also present during the demonstration.

Later, the officials gathered in front of the office of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin to press for their demands.

Officials from NID wing said if their demands are not met, they would first observe a half-day work stoppage, followed by a full-day strike.

If that failed, they threatened to shut down all Election Commission activities across the country.

Mohammad Motiur Rahman, secretary general of BECOA, said that
the National Identity Registration Act 2023 must be repealed by March 12.

If there is no visible progress on this matter, a human chain programmes will be held on March 13 at 11:00am in front of the EC Secretariat, EC’s National Identity Registration Wing, the Election Training Institute, and all field-level offices across the country.
