News Desk :

A group of supporters have reportedly attacked law-enforcing personnel in front of Dhaka’s New Market Police Station to free a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader who was arrested on charges of assaulting two computer traders.

According to Mohsin Uddin, chief of the New Market Police Station, six policemen, including Assistant Commissioner Tariq Latif of the New Market Zone, were injured during the attack, reports bdnews24.com

Mohammad Hossain Mithun, the joint secretary of Chhatra Dal, was arrested early Friday on allegations of assaulting two computer traders with sharp weapons near the Multiplan Centre on Elephant Road.

Shortly after the arrest, a group of 50 to 60 individuals, identified as Mithun’s supporters, gathered outside the New Market Police Station.

“Immediately after their arrival, they launched an attack and attempted to forcibly take Mithun away,” said Mohsin. “Although they failed, several of our officers sustained injuries in the attack,” he added.

Sub-Inspector Omar Faruk of the New Market Police Station has filed a case following the attack.

Authorities have since arrested seven individuals, including Mithun over the incident.
The six other detainees have been identified as Bashir Islam, Mohammad Hasan, Mohammad Emon, Masum Mahmud, Mohammad Alamin, and Akbar Ali.

On Jan 10, a group of 10 to 12 individuals attacked and injured computer traders Ehtesamul Haque and Wahidul Hasan Dipu near the Multiplan Center.

A senior police officer revealed that a former Chhatra Dal leader named Russell was arrested in Narsingdi in connection with the attack.

“During his remand, Russell disclosed that he had participated in the assault on orders from Mithun,” the officer said.

Acting on this information, police traced Mithun’s mobile phone and arrested him from the 300 Feet area of Dhaka before bringing him to the police station.
