Mustard cultivation has become popular and profitable for farmers in the Sylhet region. Mustard cultivation is increasing every year in various haors of the four districts of Sylhet division along with paddy cultivation. About 22 hectares more land has been cultivated in the current season compared to last year. Mustard cultivation is increasing in the district due to high profit at low cost, local farmers are becoming enthusiastic about cultivating this crop. Farmers are smiling as they got good prices this year.
Companyganj Upazila of Sylhet District Farmer Raihan Uddin said that he has benefited financially from cultivating mustard for the past 5 years. He is very happy that he has grown mustard on 5.5 bighas of land this season and has achieved good yields.
He said that mustard cultivation is more profitable than rice. Along with this, the market price is also much higher. However, if the farmers in this region get government facilities, they will be able to produce more mustard.
Talking about this, Abdul Matin, Agriculture Officer of Companyganj Upazila, said, “Mustard cultivation is increasing in this upazila like in various areas of Sylhet. Farmers have become quite interested.” According to sources from the Sylhet District Agricultural Extension Department, mustard has been cultivated on about 22,417 hectares of land in various districts and upazilas of Sylhet division in the current season (2024-25 financial year). Which is 22 hectares more than last year.
