Key reforms before holding free polls: Dr. Yunus

Staff Reporter :

Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus stated on Monday that reform is the central theme of the July-August student-led mass uprising, emphasizing his government’s commitment to implementing significant reforms before conducting a ‘free and fair’ election.

He explained that the interim government is dedicated to facilitating the reform process and has already established 15 reform commissions to address key institutional issues left in disrepair during Sheikh Hasina’s dictatorship.

Prof. Yunus made these remarks during a meeting with Lord Mark Malloch-Brown, an adviser to the IMF and World Bank and former head of UNDP, at the State Guest House Jamuna.

The British peer expressed gratitude to Prof. Yunus for taking on the leadership of the interim government during a critical period in Bangladesh’s history, particularly when public expectations were exceptionally high.

Lord Malloch-Brown also offered his assistance in supporting the Bangladeshi people.

During the hour-long discussions, a range of topics were covered, including the July-August mass uprising, development challenges, the interim government’s reform agenda, the misinformation campaign against the student-led movement, healthcare, social business, and microcredit.
