Farmers are benefiting from brinjal cultivation in Kumargawn of Sylhet Sadar Upazila in the district. Therefore, day by day they are increasing the scope of palm brinjal cultivation in the whole area. The brinjal produced here is being taken to different cities of the country including Dhaka, Chittagong to satisfy the demand of the area. Many farmers of Kumargao village of Tuker Bazar area cultivate brinjal in winter even though they cultivate various types of vegetables in other times of the year. The farmers of this village have changed their fortunes by cultivating the high yielding ‘Tal Begun’ through heredity. Seeing their brinjal cultivation, many farmers in the neighboring villages have come forward to grow palm brinjal and other vegetables.
On inspection, it can be seen that more eggplants have been planted in Tukerbazar and Kumargao areas of Sadar Upazila. The eggplant produced here is being sold in the market for the last 3 months. Farmers are happy with good prices so far. In most of the fields, palm eggplant is almost at its last stage. Kumargawn village farmer Abdul Ahad said, I have been cultivating palm eggplant since my grandfather’s time. In continuation of that, this year I have cultivated palm eggplant in 100 century land. I can sell tal eggplants for about 4 lakh taka by spending 1 lakh 20 thousand taka. Cultivation and sale of eggplant and other vegetables is almost at the end.
Another eggplant farmer Ahmed Ali said, I have cultivated palm eggplant on two bigha land where till now I have sold 3 lakhs of brinjal. I hope to cultivate palm eggplant on more land next year.
According to the information of the Agriculture Department, palm eggplant has been cultivated in 40 hectares of land in Sadar Upazila. Where the amount of palm eggplant produced is 600 metric tons.
