Prof Rafiqul new RUD VC

Professor Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, a professor of Economics at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), has been appointed vice-chancellor of Royal University of Dhaka (RUD) by the government.

The Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education issued a notification on August 31, 2026, approving his appointment for four years from the date he joins the university.

The appointment was made with the approval of the President and Chancellor of the university under Section 31(1) of the Private University Act, 2010, according to the notification.

Professor Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Islam will serve as vice-chancellor for a four-year term from the date of his joining.

The appointment comes as Royal University of Dhaka has faced various complexities in its academic and administrative activities. The university expects the new leadership to help overcome those challenges and bring greater momentum to its academic operations.

The appointment has also generated enthusiasm among students, teachers, officials and employees of the university.

Members of the university’s Board of Trustees expressed gratitude to the government for appointing the new vice-chancellor.

Professor Dr Dipu Siddiqui, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Royal University of Dhaka, congratulated Professor Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Islam on his appointment.

He expressed hope that the university would gain new momentum under the new vice-chancellor’s skilled, experienced and dynamic leadership.

Siddiqui said the new leadership would strengthen the university’s capacity to meet students’ academic and other essential needs.

He also expressed hope that the university’s academic and administrative activities would accelerate under Professor Rafiqul Islam’s leadership.
