Fire at Wari building: 80 people rescued

At least 80 people were rescued over a calling of the national emergency service number 999 after the fire incident in a multi-storey building in Wari of the capital.
Police Inspector Anwar Sattar, media and public relations officer of National Emergency Service Number 999, confirmed the matter on Thursday.
Inspector Anwar said that at 7:30am on Thursday, a person called ‘National Emergency Service 999’ and requested emergency fire service assistance after reporting the news of a fire in a multi-storied building at 29 Rankin Street in Wari of the capital.
The call was received by 999 call taker Constable Johnny Sarkar. Johnny immediately reported the incident to the Siddikbazar Fire Service Station for prompt action.
According to the officials, after receiving the news, a team of Siddikbazar Fire Service Station rushed to the spot and broke the glass from the outside of the four floors of the multi-storied building with the help of hydraulic ladder and rescued 70-80 people alive.
Earlier, a fire broke out on the 4th floor of a 10-storey building. The fire in the building has been completely extinguished. No casualty was reported.
Meanwhile, another fire broke out in a fabric warehouse in the Konabari area of Gazipur City Corporation on Thursday afternoon.
A total of seven fire engines were working to control the blaze around 6 pm, when this report was filed.
The blaze also spread to the residential areas adjacent to the warehouse, said Abdullah, who owns several rooms there.
The fire at the warehouse started around 3:35pm, said firefighter Arif Hossain of Fire Service and Civil Defence.
