3 get death for killing AIUB student
A Narayanganj court on Monday sentenced three muggers to death for killing American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) student Wazed Alam Shimanto during a robbery in the city in 2024.
Narayanganj District and Sessions’ Judge Abu Shamim Azad pronounced the verdict against Anik, Akash Khan and Chandi Babu.
The three were convicted over the killing of Shimanto, a second-year student of AIUB’s Department of Computer Science, who was attacked during a mugging on December 12, 2024.
According to the prosecution, the three muggers intercepted Shimanto in front of Morgan Girls’ High School at Deubhog in Narayanganj city at around 6:00am.
The attackers stabbed him indiscriminately before fleeing with his bag and mobile phone.
Shimanto was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
His father, Hazi Alam, subsequently filed a case with Narayanganj Sadar Police Station over the killing.
Police later arrested the three accused from different parts of the district in connection with the incident.
All three subsequently gave confessional statements before the court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The case centred on the fatal mugging of Shimanto on December 12, 2024, after the accused allegedly intercepted him during his morning journey in Narayanganj city.
