Most BD students not good at IELTS reading module

Most Bangladeshi students are not good enough at reading modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination due to lack of idea on skimming and shortage of vocabulary.

Experts told The New Nation that under the ‘reading’ category, most of the students face the biggest challenge in concentration and difficulty in finding meaning of the passages.

The IELTS is the mandatory language proficiency test for students from non-English speaking countries while applying for education in English-speaking countries.

IELTS Trainer and Founder of EnglishA2Z Sabbir Sarkar told The New Nation that candidates in our country are not good at general reading because of their vocabulary shortage and they do not know how to paraphrase the text which is crucial for a student to cover the passages in a short time.

‘Students face extreme challenges to cover all three passages on time as they practiced subjective reading at their primary and college level but never practice on academic passage, he said.

Sabbir mentioned students should read journals, articles, and different English books which will help them flourishing their understanding skills.

A student counselor of MENTORS said in Reading Module there are 3 long passagesand 40 questions in total, so there is no way to waste time. Candidates should know how to skim and scan the passages; it will help them to obtain a good band score in IELTS.

Meanwhile, a survey by LeapScholar, an overseas study platform, has found that 62 percent of Indian students still face difficulty in holding fluent conversations in English and its pronunciation.
