20 accused in Bhairab ex-councillor murder case

A case has been filed with Bhairab Model Police Station three days after the murder of former councillor and banned Awami Jubo League Bhairab upazila unit General Secretary Al-Amin Saikat, 42.

The deceased’s wife, Tania Khanam, filed the case as the plaintiff on Wednesday night. The complaint named eight people and 10-15 unidentified people as accused.

Bhairab Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbubur Rahman said the deceased’s wife filed the case on Wednesday, three days after the incident. “The complaint named eight people and made 10-15 unidentified people accused. Police are trying to arrest the accused. Further legal action will be taken after receiving the autopsy report,” he said.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbubur Rahman said the deceased’s uncle and three cousins, along with some other accused, are members of his family. However, no one has been arrested yet, and all the named accused are absconding. Police have confirmed the filing of the case.

According to the case statement, at around 12:15am on Sunday, the accused allegedly attacked Al-Amin Saikat with sharp weapons at Tinpatri in Bhairab Bazar over previous enmity, leaving him critically injured. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

The deceased had a long-standing dispute with his uncle and cousins over property. Al-Amin was a former director of the Bhairab Chamber of Commerce. He also owned a residential hotel in Bhairab Bazar and was involved in the fertiliser and rice mill businesses.

The deceased’s wife and plaintiff in the case, Tania Khanam, said, “My husband had a dispute with his uncles and cousins. They and other terrorists hacked my husband to death. My husband had told me about these matters before his death. I filed the case three days later after consulting my relatives.
“I demand strict justice for the murderers of my husband.”
