Legal notice demanding ban on production, broadcasting of movies, dramas based solely on love
A lawyer has sent a legal notice to the government demanding a ban on the production and broadcasting of movies and dramas based solely on love and romance.
The lawyer has demanded that the production and broadcasting of such dramas and movies should be stopped in order to prevent moral degradation of the youth, maintain social order and develop creative talent.
Not only that, the Cabinet Secretary, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Chairman of the Bangladesh Film Censor Board have been asked to respond to this notice within the next 10 days.
The notice was sent by Supreme Court lawyer Mahmudul Hasan Mamun on Thursday.
If appropriate action is not taken within the stipulated time, a writ petition will be filed in the High Court to protect national culture under Article 102 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, the notice states.
The notice has requested the concerned to take effective administrative steps in the production and broadcasting of content based on science, education, history, the Liberation War and defense and to inform them about the steps taken.
It says that the current film and drama industry of Bangladesh is dominated by love and excessive romantic contents.
The continuous broadcasting of such content has created an extreme cultural imbalance.
Due to which the youth and students are becoming seriously inattentive to their studies and careers.
In addition, extramarital affairs and relationships are being presented in a very normal and glorified manner in these dramas and movies, which is extremely destroying the traditional moral structure of the society.
The lawyer argues that the free display of such immoral relationships in the mainstream media is playing a significant role in creating social anarchy.
It is directly related to the alarming increase in crimes such as adultery and rape in the country.
Protecting the youth and the general public from this moral degradation and maintaining family values has now become an absolute administrative necessity to maintain social order.
The notice, citing legal arguments, states that according to Article 21(1) of the Constitution, it is the sacred duty of every citizen to abide by the Constitution and the law and to protect social order and state property.
On the other hand, although Article 39 of the Constitution mentions freedom of speech and expression, it is subject to reasonable restrictions imposed by law in the interests of decency or morality.
In addition, according to Article 23 of the Constitution, the preservation of national culture and heritage is a constitutional responsibility of the state.
