Hillary Clinton appeals for stopping persecution of Dr Yunus
Staff Reporter :
Hillary Clinton has urged all people around the world to stand by Nobel Laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus to end the persecution against him over a labour case.
“Stand with me and more than 160 other global leaders to support great humanitarian and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus in his moment of need,” she tweeted on her verified page on Wednesday.
Urging all to be united, she wrote, “Join the movement to demand an end to his persecution.”
She has also shared the link of the recent open statement by prominent global leaders to end persecution against Dr Yunus.
The leaders ended the statement saying.
“We hope that you ensure the resolution of these legal issues in an expedient, impartial, and just manner while also ensuring a free, fair, and participatory national election in the coming months, and respect for all human rights.”
“We will join with millions of concerned citizens around the world in closely tracking how these matters are resolved in the days ahead,” the statement further read.
The renowned economist and founder of the microcredit institution Grameen Bank has recently faced legal challenges pertaining to a labour case.
It is important to note that Dr. Yunus has found himself entangled in these legal issues under the governance of the Awami League government.
The growing support from international leaders and citizens alike has highlighted the significance of addressing the concerns surrounding his situation.
In the context of the signed statement, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam on Tuesday mentioned that over half of the signatories are retired.
He further said, “Dr. Muhammad Yunus or his associates are still spending money against Bangladesh. There is no doubt about it.”
Regarding the ongoing legal case against Dr. Muhammad Yunus for violating labour laws and committing financial self-harm, the State Minister stated that none of the cases against him had any influence on the government.
