Chanchal Chowdhury in Tarasankar’s ‘Ganadevata’ web series in Kolkata

After the release of ‘Karagar’ and ‘Hawa’, actor Chanchal Chowdhury has become popular in West Bengal as well as Bangladesh. He has already worked in Srijit Mukherji’s ‘Padatik’ movie.
The movie is waiting to release. Chanchal played the role of legendary film director Mrinal Sen. Now the news came, this actor will be seen in West Bengal’s web series. Kamleswar Mukherjee is making the series of
the same name based on Tarasankar Banerjee’s novel titled ‘Ganadevata’.
In the early 1940s, the novel ‘Ganadevata’ dealt with the British: the rule, the situation in rural Bengal at that time, the freedom movement and evolution of rural society in the context of independence movement and industrialisation. Later, the novel ‘Panchagram’ published by the author was presented as a part of ‘Ganadevata’.
Director Kamleswar said that the web series is being arranged with these two novels where Chanchal will be seen as the main character ‘Debnath Ghosh’ or ‘Debu’.
When Chanchal was contacted about this new series, he told this correspondent, “Talking about the web series. Not finalised yet. Since work in another country, there is a visa issue. I have the possibility to do the work if the bat matches the ball.”
Tarun Majumdar made the movie ‘Ganadevata’ based on the same story in the seventies.
Director Kamleswar Mukherjee said that he got the inspiration to make the web series from that movie. He said, “I got inspiration from Tarun Majumdar’s movie. But my series will be ‘Ganadevata’ and ‘Panchagram’ – from these two novels. Everything cannot be shown in detail in the movie. But I can keep many things of the novel in the web series. It will be a period-drama.” Soumitra Chattopadhyay played the role of ‘Debu’ in Tarun Majumdar’s movie. Chanchal is being taken in that role. As the reason for casting him, the director said, “I think Chanchal will suit this role well. It is not possible to play this role without strong actors.”
Arunima Ghosh will be seen as ‘Durga’ in the ‘Ganadevata’ series. There will also be Kinjal Nanda, Loknath Dey, etc.
Director Kamleswar has planned to start shooting by next September or October. It has been reported that Camellia Productions will soon launch their very own platform. ‘Ganadevata’ web series will be available there.
