Rohingya genocide case: OIC urges member states to support Gambia

The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, has called on member states to provide greater assistance to Gambia in funding their case at the International Court of Justice regarding the Rohingya genocide.
At a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, Taha emphasised the importance of OIC member states joining Gambia in this case and supporting the fund established by the OIC.
While commenting after the at the State Guest House Padma on Sunday, he acknowledged that while Gambia is not a wealthy or large country, they have shown significant efforts in pursuing justice for the Rohingya people.. Regarding the funding issue, Dr Momen said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the OIC Secretary General, and the President of Gambia have jointly written a letter to OIC member states, appealing for support for the fund created by the organisation.
Highlighting the significance of Bangladesh within the OIC, the Secretary General praised the country’s efforts and expressed gratitude on behalf of the OIC member states for their tremendous work in assisting the Rohingya people.
Regarding the Rohingya repatriation, Taha said, “Rohingya is one of the top priority issues for the OIC. We are here to convey our thanks for the tremendous efforts done by Bangladesh government. These Rohingya people are suffering. They deserve peace, security and better life.”
The Foreign Minister stated that the OIC has taken a leading role in addressing the Rohingya crisis and stressed the importance of unity among Muslim nations.
Additionally, he said that the OIC delegation plans to visit the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar to assess the situation firsthand.
“The OIC is taking a leading role. They will pay a visit to the Rohingya camps on Monday. The OIC is taking a leadership role in various international summits on Rohingyas, even at the UN,” said Momen.
“The OIC took a leading role in the passage of the resolution on Rohingya at the UN,” he added.
About the meeting discussion, Foreign Minister said that they have discussed the consolidation of the Muslim nations to stand against the double standard of different countries where the Muslim religious scriptures are burnt or humiliated.
“We have also highlighted that the Muslim countries are abound with resources. If we can stop fighting among ourselves, we will be able to make more development,” he said.
As the Chancellor of the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), the OIC Secretary General Taha will join the 35th Convocation of the IUT to be held on May 30, the Foreign Minister said.
