Daily dengue influx hits 988

A total of 988 people were hospitalised with dengue across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, while two more patients died of the mosquito-borne disease during the same period.

With the latest figures, the number of dengue patients hospitalised across the country since the beginning of this year has risen to 41,032, while the death toll has reached 113.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) disclosed the figures in its daily dengue update issued on Saturday.

According to the bulletin, Dhaka division recorded the highest number of new hospitalisations outside the city corporations, with 176 patients. Barishal division reported 170 cases, followed by Khulna with 163, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) with 149,

Chattogram division with 123, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) with 102, Mymensingh with 50, Rajshahi with 49 and Rangpur with six.

Both deaths reported in the past 24 hours occurred at hospitals in the DSCC area. The deceased were one man and one woman.

Men account for 61.8% of new cases
Men continued to account for the majority of new dengue infections. Of the 988 patients hospitalised in the past 24 hours, 611 were men and 377 were women.

Men therefore accounted for 61.8% of the new cases, while women made up 38.2%.

Young adults were the most affected age group. The highest number of cases-163-was recorded among people aged 26 to 30. This was followed by 146 cases among those aged 21 to 25, 139 among those aged 16 to 20, 96 among those aged 31 to 35 and 79 among those aged 36 to 40.

Children were also among those hospitalised. During the past 24 hours, 57 children under five years of age, 50 children aged six to 10 and 56 children aged 11 to 15 were admitted to hospitals.

Among other age groups, 65 patients were aged 41 to 45, 42 were aged 46 to 50 and 31 were aged 51 to 55.
Women account for higher share of deaths

Despite men making up the majority of new infections, women account for a larger share of dengue deaths this year.

Of the 113 people who have died from dengue since January, 54.9% were women and 45.1% were men.

Meanwhile, 986 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering in the past 24 hours. The total number of patients discharged since the beginning of the year has reached 38,179.

DGHS data shows that dengue hospitalisations have already crossed the 41,000 mark this year. In the latest one-week period alone, 7,446 new patients were hospitalised, while 23 people died from the disease.
