Current taxation system unfair, speakers observe

Discussants on Thursday said in an exchange viewing meeting observed that the current taxation system in Bangladesh is not fair for the poor.
They said the present tax system in the country is totally dependent on indirect taxation which created a huge burden on the lower income group of people.
“The current taxation system in Bangladesh is snatching most portion of earnings from the poor people,” the speakers said at the meeting at a hotel in Segunbagicha in the capital.
Wave Foundation organised the meeting with the support of Christian Aid as part of its ‘Promoting citizen’s participation for progressive taxation project’.
Under the project the foundation working on creating public awareness about taxation at field level across the country.
Representatives from different media participated in the meeting.
Kaniz Fatima, Deputy Director of Wave Foundation, moderated the programme while, Kh. Tahsin Ashrafi, the Project Officer placed details of the foundation and its project.
The programme proposed to introduce a progressive taxation system to reduce earning discrimination between the poor and the rich.
They stressed the need for strengthen taxation system bringing the rich and capable people under tax net and increasing allocations to the service sectors.
