US visitor visa holders barred from work

The US Embassy in Dhaka has warned Bangladeshi nationals against engaging in activities prohibited under B1/B2 visitor visas, stressing that the visas are intended only for specific and temporary visits to the United States.

In a post on its verified Facebook page on Saturday, the embassy outlined several activities that are not permitted for B1/B2 visa holders.

According to the embassy, visitors cannot travel to the United States for birth tourism-that is, to give birth with the intention of securing US citizenship for the child.

B1/B2 visa holders are also prohibited from taking up employment or working for payment from a US employer or business.

The embassy further clarified that visitor visas cannot be used to pursue studies leading to a degree or institutional academic credit.

The B1/B2 visa category is designed for temporary travel for limited purposes. The B1 visa generally covers eligible short-term business activities, while the B2 visa is primarily intended for tourism, holidays and medical treatment.

The warning comes amid increased attention to compliance with US visa conditions and follows an earlier advisory issued to Bangladeshi students.

On August 22, the US Embassy in Dhaka also cautioned Bangladeshi students on matters related to studying in the United States.

The latest notice serves as a reminder that obtaining a visitor visa does not grant unrestricted permission to work or study in the United States.

Travellers are expected to comply with the conditions of their visa category and US immigration laws throughout their stay.
