‘Our banks are not at the stage of shut down as us banks’

Despite having some weaknesses in the financial sector of Bangladesh, our banks still not at the stage of close down what happened in USA a few days back, said the Prime Minister’s Economic Affairs Adviser Dr. Mashiur Rahman.
In response to questions from journalists, Mashiur Rahman said this at the end of a seminar at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) on Wednesday.
As in USA two banks closed down in three day, replying the Journalists questions about our banking sector, Economic Affairs Adviser said about the lack of governance in banking sector, after ensuring that the customers’ confidence on banking sector still remains to an acceptable level.
While speaking about the ongoing macroeconomic stress, he further said that the exchange rate should be kept at a tolerably flexible level. Reducing the reserve too much or to keep too much both creates problem on economy and government is trying to maintain the optimal level.
As our market on high-tech products relatively small, we have some limitation on this type of investment but we have other sectors to invest. Government always encourages the invest and re-invest process with maintaining the free market characteristics, Dr. Mashiur Rahman added.
The seminar titled ‘Gig Economy and Bangladesh: Opportunities, Challenges and Way Forward’ was organized by Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS). Dr Mashiur Rahman, was presented there as the Chief Guest, and Major General Sheikh Pasha Habib Uddin, Director General of BIISS delivered the welcome remarks.
Three presentations were made in the Seminar. Dr Mahfuz Kabir, Research Director, BIISS, delivered a presentation on “Market Characteristics, Growth and Contributions of
the Gig Economy”. A presentation titled “Services Outsourcing, Challenges and Opportunities” was made by Mr Wahid Sharif, President, the Bangladesh Association of Contact Center and Outsourcing (BACCO). Mr Mike Kazi, Founder and CEO, Apex DMIT Ltd presented on “Export of IT-Enabled Services, Skills, and Way Forward”.
