Cotton warehouse fire under control after 8 hours

The fire in the cotton warehouse in Chhota Kumira area of Sitakunda Upazila of Chattogram was brought under control after 8 hours of frantic efforts of 11 units of fire service. It’s an incident just a week after an explosion at an oxygen plant in the upazila leaving six people dead.
The fire was brought under control around 6 pm on Saturday evening, said Sultan Mahmod, Senior Station Officer of Kumira Fire Service Station.
Meanwhile, Sitakunda police station Officer in-Charge (OC) Tofayel Ahmed said that the fire is still on in the cotton warehouse. He (OC) said it around 8pm on Saturday night. The immediate extent of damage caused by the fire was not known, OC added.
Earlier, a fire broke out at a cotton warehouse located in Hingiri Para area next to the Nemsan Container Depot, adjacent to Chhota Kumira Bypass Road around 11 am. Five units of the fire service joint first after receiving the news. Later six more units were added.
According to the fire service, the fire started while welding and cutting steel with gas cylinders for the purpose of repairing the structure in the cotton warehouse.
The fire later spread throughout the warehouse.
