Bangladesh recorded a resounding six-wicket victory over world champions England in their first Twenty20 International (T20I) match at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Thursday. It is the maiden T20I victory for the Tigers against the Lions.
One-down Najmul Hossain Shanto, promising batters of Bangladesh, ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and with the help of the bowlers powered the hosts to earn the historic victory. Shanto smashed a terrific 51. His 30-ball innings was laced with eight fours. It was Shanto’s third half-century in his T20I cricket. He was adjudged the Man of the Match for his superb innings.
Chasing England’s fighting total of 156 for the loss of six wickets in the allotted 20 overs, Bangladesh stormed into the victory target making 158 for the loss of four wickets when they had 12 balls to spare.
Bangladesh had a good start as openers Litton Das and Rony Talukdar contributed together 33 runs before Rony Talukdar was bowled out by Adil Rashid.
After Rony’s dismissal, Litton could not stay at the crease for a long period as he was caught at the mid-on by Chris Woakes off Jofra Archer when Bangladesh’s total was 43 for the loss of two wickets.
After Litton’s departure, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Towhid Hridoy salvaged their team putting together 64 runs in the third wicket stand before Hridoy was caught at the midwicket by Sam Curran off Moeen Ali when Bangladesh’s score was 108 for the loss of three wickets.
Then, Shanto was bowled out by Mark Wood when Bangladesh’s score
was 112 for the loss of four wickets.
After Shanto’s departure, Shakib Al Hasan and Afif Hossain guided their team to anchor the winning target. They added together 46 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket stand.
Shakib remained unbeaten with 34 runs. His 24-ball knock saw six fours.
Afif remained unbeaten with 15 runs.
Earlier, Towhid Hridoy hit 24 from 17 balls including two fours and a sixer.
Rony Talukdar, who played his second T20I after a long years, scored 21 from 14 deliveries including four fours.
Moeen Ali, Mark Wood, Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer took one wicket apiece.
Earlier, England made a superb start with the two openers Phil Salt and Jos Buttler put on together 80 runs before Salt was caught behind by wicketkeeper Litton Das off Nasum Ahmed.
Salt made 38 from 35 balls featuring four fours and a sixer.
One-down Dawid Malan (4) was caught at the long-on by Najmul Hossain Shanto off Shakib Al Hasan when the visitors’ total was 88 for the loss of two wickets.
Opener Buttler and second-down Ben Duckett built a worthy partnership scoring together 47 runs in the third-wicket stand before Duckett was bowled out by Mustafizur Rahman when England’s score was 135 for the loss of three wickets.
After Duckett’s dismissal, Buttler could stay at the crease for a short period as he was caught at the long-on by Najmul Hossain Shanto off Hasan Mahmud when the touring side’s total was 135 for the loss of four wickets.
Buttler hit a superb 67. His 42-ball innings saw four sixes and four fours.
Duckett scored 20 from 13 balls including three fours.
After Buttler’s dismissal, England batters failed to make any notable partnership.
Hasan Mahmud bagged a pair of wickets in the space of 26 runs, while Shakib Al Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed took one wicket each conceding 26, 31, 34 and 35 runs respectively.
