The workers of Paradise Cables Limited of Narayanganj staged a demonstration to demand payment of 18 months of arrears.
On Sunday, they held a protest rally in front of the National Press Club under the banner of Labour Union of the Paradise Cables Limited.
In the protests, the workers said that about 260 workers have been working in Paradise Cables Limited located in Qutub Aile of Fatulla, Narayanganj for a long time. But the owner is not paying them any salary for the last 18 months. As a result, they have been passing a miserable life along with starving and half-starving since long.
Alleging that due to the internal conflict of the four brothers who own the factory, the wages and allowances of the workers have been withheld, they further said that either they should keep the factory running by paying regular wages to the workers, or close the factory by paying the arrears of wages and allowances as per the law.
But they (owners) are doing neither. If the arrears are not paid immediately, the labor leaders have warned that they will launch a tough movement against the factory along with the leaders of the labour trade unions.
Mohammad Russell, President of Paradise Cables Limited Sramik Union, presided over the protest rally were the General Secretary of Bangladesh Garments Workers Trade Union Shamim Hossain, General Secretary of Narayanganj District Branch Iqbal Hossain, General Secretary of Paradise Cables Limited Workers Union Nazmul Haque and Vice-President Md. Salim were also present.
