MCC announces Tk 822cr budget

Mymensingh City Corporation (MCC) has announced a budget of Tk 8.223 billion (Tk 822.30 crore) for the 2026-2027 fiscal year, with no new taxes imposed on city residents.

Despite limited local revenue and increasing demand for urban services, the city authorities have decided not to introduce any additional tax burden, making it one of the key features of the new budget.

The budget was announced on Monday by City Administrator Roknuzzaman Rokon at a special budget session held at the Shaheed Shahabuddin Auditorium in Mymensingh.

According to the proposed budget, Tk 1.4627 billion (Tk 146.27 crore) has been projected as revenue income, while Tk 6.7603 billion (Tk 676.03 crore) has been allocated for development expenditure.

During the same session, the revised budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year amounting to Tk 6.4379 billion (Tk 643.79 crore) was also approved. The total projected expenditure for the new fiscal year has been estimated at Tk 7.9011 billion (Tk 790.11 crore).

The budget clearly states that no new taxes will be imposed during the current fiscal year. However, authorities said taxes would be introduced in the newly expanded wards only after essential civic services are ensured.

Officials also acknowledged that implementing a large-scale development budget without increasing local revenue would remain a significant challenge. The largest allocation has been made for the development sector, with Tk 6.7603 billion (Tk 676.03 crore) earmarked for various projects.

This includes Tk 100 million (Tk 10 crore) for roads, drains and marketplaces, Tk 20 million (Tk 2 crore) for canal and drain excavation, Tk 110 million (Tk 11 crore) for electrical engineering and street lighting, Tk 166 million (Tk 16.60 crore) for sanitation, Tk 46.5 million (Tk 4.65 crore) for education, and Tk 65 million (Tk 6.50 crore) for healthcare.

An additional Tk 357.4 million (Tk 35.74 crore) has been allocated for administrative and establishment expenses. In his budget speech, Administrator Roknuzzaman Rokon said that Mymensingh city receives a large influx of people from neighbouring districts every day for education, healthcare, trade and administrative services, increasing pressure on civic amenities.

However, the absence of major industries and commercial hubs has limited local revenue generation, posing a major challenge to sustainable urban development. He further said that since assuming office, the city administration has intensified efforts to reduce waterlogging by cleaning drains and canals.

Long-standing encroachments and illegal fillings in the Akua and Goailkandi canals have been removed, restoring water flow. Although temporary waterlogging may occur during the monsoon, permanent waterlogging has been significantly reduced.

He also said that around 550 sanitation workers have been recruited to strengthen the city’s cleanliness programme.

Further initiatives will be undertaken to improve waste management, upgrade slum areas, free footpaths from illegal occupation and ease traffic congestion.”Our primary goal is to ensure uninterrupted civic services for the people.

Urban development will continue in line with the government’s policies,” he added.

Among others, Chief Executive Officer Sumona Al Majid, Chief Engineer Md. Rafiqul Islam Mia, Transport General Manager Rajib Ul Ahsan, representatives of different political parties, business leaders, journalists and members of civil society attended the budget session.
