Change of school name demanded in Ishwardi

The name of Nazim Uddin, who opposed the Bengali language for seventy-one years, is carrying the stigma of the name of Ishwardi people of the important northern town. Later, a railway school was established in Ishwardi in 1952 in the name of the Prime Minister of East Pakistan, Khwaja Nazim Uddin. The great Liberation War was organized by the ladder of language movement. Bengali people gave their lives for language and patriotism. Meanwhile, 51 years have passed since independence. But the name of ‘Bangladesh Railway Govt Nazimuddin High School’, established in the name of that Nazim Uddin who opposed the Bengali language, still remains. Although several protest rallies and demonstrations were held to demand the name change, the people of Ishwardi will have to bear this stigma even on this great Ekushey February.
In 2020, Ishwardi Upazila and Municipal Chhatra League took part in a protest march to change the name of the school and removed the name of Nazim Uddin with black ink from the main gate of the school. But that didn’t work either. The name has been rewritten.
An inquiry committee was formed for the change of name and later the proposed report of the inquiry committee was sent to the higher office of the Railways, but no action has been taken so far.
