Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC met with prominent Islamic scholars to promote the use of Bangla QR in religious institutions and advance the country’s transition towards a cashless economy.

According to a press release, the meeting was held at a hotel in Dhaka on Saturday.

Islamic Foundation Bangladesh Director General Mufti Mohammad Mohibbullahil Baqee attended the programme as chief guest.

Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and Sole Representative on the Islami Bank Board of Directors, Mohammad Zahir Hussain, addressed the programme as a special guest.

Islami Bank Managing Director (Acting) Md Altaf Hossain presided over the meeting.

Islami Bank Shari’ah Supervisory Committee Chairman Mufti Shamsuddin Zia, Bangladesh Bank Shari’ah Supervisory Board Member Shah Muhammad Waliullah, and Bangladesh Bank Islami Banking Regulations and Policy Department Additional Director Mohammad Zakir Hossain also addressed the programme.

Islami Bank Additional Managing Director Engr Mohammed Jamal Uddin Mazumder presented the keynote paper on Bangla QR, while Additional Managing Director Dr M Kamal Uddin Jasim delivered the welcome address.

Members of the bank’s Shari’ah Supervisory Committee and senior executives also attended the programme.

Mufti Mohammad Mohibbullahil Baqee said financial transactions had evolved with technological advances and that linking religious institutions to this transformation was now essential.

He said that simple, modern digital payment systems such as Bangla QR could help religious institutions conduct financial transactions more transparently, securely, and systematically.

He called on Islamic scholars and religious leaders to help build a cashless Bangladesh by promoting modern, secure and convenient digital transaction systems in religious institutions.

Mohammad Zahir Hussain said Bangladesh was gradually undergoing a digital transformation and that expanding digital transactions was crucial to modernising the country’s financial system, making it more convenient and inclusive.

Bringing religious institutions under the Bangla QR network would create opportunities to involve a large section of the population in digital transactions, he added.

Md Altaf Hossain said Islami Bank continued to move forward with the trust and support of its customers despite numerous challenges.

He said the bank was working to provide its customers with simple, secure and modern banking services.
