For the first time, the Bangladesh Railway (BR) conducted a test run of a train “track car” on the 32 km long new railway line on the Bhanga-Padma Bridge Shariatpur’s Jazira section under the Padma Bridge Rail Link Project on Tuesday morning.
According to the Padma Bridge Railway Station official, the train departed from the Bhanga Station at 10am and reached the junction of Padma Bridge at Jazira point at 12:30 pm.
The train is built in a special design known as “Gang-Car”.
“A ‘track car’ operated for the first time after installation of modern railway lines on 32 km long railway track. The work of this railway line was completed a few days ago. The China made ‘Gang car’ was operated for a test run today. The car moved slowly as it was experimental. Observations are made intermittently in few places. A railway line has been established on this route for train movement at a speed of 120 km and today’s test run was successful,” Station in-Charge of Mawa-Bhanga (Section-2) part of Padma Bridge Rail Link Project Lt. Col. Tauhid said.
However, out of these 32 km long railway line from Bhanga, four km stoneless and 28 km stoned rail line has been completed. The target of starting railway communication through Padma Bridge is next June. The progress of Mawa Railway Station is about 85 percent and the progress of the work on Padma railway station at Jazira point is more than 77 percent.
Though the train will cross the Padma Bridge on the Mawa-Bhanga link section installing the work of the railway line on the main bridge has yet not been started. The preparatory work for laying the railway line on the ground floor of Padma Bridge is going on with caution. The train will cross the bridge only after completion the railway line on the bridge. Engineers are busy in installing railway line without stone. The 172 km long rail link project from the capital Dhaka to Jashore via Padma Bridge will be completed in 2024.
However, the government has set a target to open the railway service for traffic through the Padma Bridge in June next year.
