Hasina's Bid to Return

Fascist must return to be hanged Nahid Islam

Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Chief Whip of the Opposition Nahid Islam said that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina should return to Bangladesh only for the execution of the death sentence handed down against her.

He made the remarks on Friday while addressing a discussion and award ceremony organised by the National SME Association to mark International Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh, in Kakrail.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, Nahid referred to a recent interview in which, he claimed, plans were mentioned for Sheikh Hasina to return to Bangladesh in December.

“Bangladesh has already suffered 16 years of destruction. We also want her to return, but only for the execution of the death sentence,” he said.

Nahid stated that a verdict had already been delivered in Bangladesh and urged the government to pursue the necessary diplomatic and legal channels to bring back what he described as a “perpetrator of genocide” and implement the court’s ruling.

Responding to questions from journalists, he said it was for the Bangladesh government to determine how Sheikh Hasina would return, whether she would surrender, and under what arrangements.

He added that the government would need to engage with New Delhi on the matter and decide the timing, process and implementation of the court’s verdict.

He further claimed that Sheikh Hasina’s decisions were not solely her own but depended on what was permitted by authorities in New Delhi.

According to Nahid, any potential return, legal proceedings or political developments would ultimately hinge on diplomatic and political understanding between Dhaka and New Delhi.

He also asserted that the Awami League was “no longer a political party”.
Nahid said those who participated in the July uprising were prepared to face any political situation in defence of the country’s independence, sovereignty and economy.

He also warned against any attempt to create political unrest centred on Sheikh Hasina or the Awami League, saying that if the government allowed such efforts to gain traction, it would itself face the greatest consequences.

He added that participants in the July movement, alongside families of those killed and injured, remained prepared for any eventuality.

On the issue of legal action against the Awami League, Nahid said the government was considering prosecuting the party as an organisation, describing the move as the “right course”.

He reiterated his position that Sheikh Hasina’s sentence had already been delivered and should now be enforced.
