‘Politics key to change people’s lives’

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Friday said politics is not merely about enjoying power but about improving the lives of people through meaningful action.

Speaking as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of a month-long tree plantation programme at Barishal University, organised to mark the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the minister said political parties must demonstrate their commitment to public welfare through their work.

“We must prove that politics is not merely a process of enjoying power. The political party that comes to power or wants to come to power must prove it through its activities,” he said.

Swapon said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has demonstrated that commitment through his leadership.

He also urged the Ziaur Rahman Foundation to continue its welfare-oriented activities alongside the government’s efforts for the people.

Following a discussion organised by the foundation, the minister planted saplings on the Barishal University campus.

Replying to a question about the Prime Minister’s planned visit to Barishal, Swapon said the visit would primarily focus on tree plantation activities.

He added that the Prime Minister would also hold discussions with senior party leaders and public representatives on the development of the country’s southern region.

The programme, chaired by Barishal University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Mamun Or Rashid, was attended by Ziaur Rahman Foundation Executive Director Prof Dr Farhad Halim Doner, Barishal City Corporation Administrator Bilkis Akhter Jahan Shirin, teachers, students, and local Chhatra Dal leaders and activists.
