ENT Hospital needs expansion to render ample medical services
Reza Mahmud :
About 250 patients come to the National Institute of Ear, Nose And Throat (ENT Hospital) at Tejgaon in the capital, every day.
On average 30 to 40 patients seek admission in the hospital daily.
But the hospital could afford five to seven patients only due to bed crisis, the officials of the hospital said.
According to the hospital administration, all 135 beds of the hospital remain fulfilled every day.
Those who cannot be admitted return home with despair and suffer tremendously for lack of sufficient medical treatment for months after months.
“Around 30 to 40 patients vie for an empty bed in the hospital every day. But we can provide seats only five to seven patients. The rest of the patients used to return home with huge disappointment,” Dr Ali Noor Md. Bashir Ahmed, Assistant Director of the hospital told The New Nation.
He said that the hospital administration is approaching the health ministry for more lands for expansion of hospital building.
When contacted, Professor Dr. Md Abu Hanif, Director of the hospital told The New Nation, “It is very much necessary to expand the hospital. We have submitted proposals to the health ministry in this regard.”
The Director said that the hospital has been constructed upon two bighas (0.6612 Acre) of land only. They said there is no possibility to expand the hospital with constructing more building in this land.
As a result the hospital building is growing as a high rise one.
It planned to make a 12 storied building in which the construction work till 10th floor has been completed.
It will be usable as hospital cabins by 2023. Then the number of beds would be 250. But as per the pressures of the patients, the officials said that it is needed to make it a 500 bed hospital minimum.
In a bid to construct new buildings, officials suggested the ministry to allot the ENT hospital more land from the neighboring Tejgaon thana health complex which is kept unused for long.
“If it can be expanded with more buildings and beds, the huge number of patients would get sufficient medical treatment they aspirant for,” the officials said. They said that the utmost care to the patients of the hospital director make it very popular.
As a result, huge number of patients used to rush in the health care facility every day.
They said that once the hospital staff including physicians and nurses had to pass their days sitting idle due to very poor number of patients used to visit it.
The huge numbers of eligible ENT affected patients were unaware about the hospital as it is situated a backward place.
“By this time, the hospital Director Professor Dr. Abu Hanif make the hospital famous and popular among the patients with his great efforts,” said one of the officials.
The Director keep the hospital clean and luminous like a private clinic.
Besides, all the staff including physicians and nurses are very much careful of the patients.
“Exchanging only Tk 10, patients get precious medicines and injections free in cost with caring medical treatment which attracted more and more patients every day,” said one of the officials.
